What can jumping from an airplane teach us about fear? Discover how hypnosis and Belief Code help release limiting beliefs and build lasting confidence.

Sometimes You Have to Jump: What Skydiving Taught Me About Fear, Hypnosis, and Belief Code

There are moments in life when standing at the edge feels far scarier than taking the leap.

Recently, I crouched by the open door of an airplane fourteen thousand feet above the ground, took one deep breath, and my instructor pushed me out into thin, cold air.

People have asked me, “Weren’t you terrified?”

The initial shock of being upside down at 125 miles per hour had me voicing a few short expletives.  I’d done  personal work with hypnosis and Belief Code which made me recognize how amazed and calm I was up until that point.

My dream of skydiving began when I was seventeen. I never found the courage to actually make the jump. I told myself all kinds of reasons why “now wasn’t the right time,” but the truth was much simpler: my subconscious mind had already decided I couldn’t do something that felt so extreme. Looking back, it’s fascinating that my subconscious once allowed me to choose illegal drugs, despite their obvious dangers and risks, yet convinced me I couldn’t jump from an airplane.

Fear Isn’t Always Logical.

The stories our subconscious mind believes often determine the risks we’re willing to take, even when one path leads to harm and the other can lead to incredible psychological growth and freedom.

The thought of soaring in the sky like a bird continued to be a dream. In my 50’s that dream became a bucket list item. Things I said I would do before I died. After a recent Belief Code Session, I realized it was time to stop putting things on the list and start doing them. I told my jumping buddy to book the date.

Fear often begins long before the moment we’re afraid. It begins in the subconscious mind. Before we ever face a challenge, our subconscious has already decided what is safe, what is dangerous, and what we believe we’re capable of doing.

Those beliefs are shaped by experiences, memories, emotions, and sometimes events we’ve completely forgotten. That’s why two people can stand in exactly the same place and have completely different reactions. One sees adventure. Another sees danger.

While I was preparing for my jump, I noticed a young woman nearby who was visibly terrified. She shared that she was making the jump because she wanted to move beyond her divorce and start a new chapter of her life.

I respected her space and didn’t try to coach her, but I couldn’t help noticing what happened afterward. The woman who landed wasn’t the same one who boarded the airplane. She was laughing, smiling, continued to repeat that she felt like she could do anything. Watching that transformation reminded me of something I see regularly in my hypnosis practice. Sometimes the greatest change isn’t what happened around us. It’s what shifted inside us.

Skydiving creates what psychologists sometimes call a “pattern interrupt.” For a brief period, your mind is completely present. The endless mental chatter stops because your brain is fully engaged in the experience as you rush towards the ground at 125 miles per hour. That initial drop wasn’t what I expected but it sent me into this silent space as I hurtled towards the ground that seemed far, far away.

The altimeter I wore stated 6,500 feet and I told my tandem partner to pull the cord. The chut unfolded and then I was pleasantly surprised because I felt exactly like I always knew I would: free, light, peaceful, calm, and amazed. As you drift and float, you notice beauty and the wonder of ‘it’ all while gliding towards the ground.

When you successfully move through something that once seemed impossible, your brain gathers powerful new evidence: “I did that.” That experience can become a reference point for future confidence.

This is also why hypnosis and Belief Code can be so powerful. Most fears don’t need an airplane to overcome them. They need the subconscious mind to update its internal story.

Hypnosis helps quiet the analytical mind so healthier patterns can take root.

Belief Code helps uncover limiting beliefs and emotional baggage that may have convinced you that you’re not safe, not capable, or not enough. Once those subconscious patterns begin to shift, people often find themselves responding differently to situations that used to trigger fear or anxiety.

My goal isn’t to convince anyone to jump out of an airplane. In fact, you don’t have to. Your “jump” may be starting a business, leaving an unhealthy relationship, speaking in public, taking a new job, or simply believing in yourself again.

Courage doesn’t always arrive because fear disappears. Sometimes courage shows up because your subconscious finally believes you’re capable of more than your fear has been telling you.

Looking back, my tandem jump wasn’t just about skydiving. It was a reminder that growth often begins on the other side of hesitation.

Every day in my practice, I watch clients take their own leaps without ever leaving the ground. And just like that young woman after her jump, many discover something they never expected: confidence was there all along. It was simply waiting for the right moment to soar.

The Science Behind the Leap

  • Novel experiences create new neural pathways.
  • Facing fear successfully teaches the brain a new prediction.
  • Confidence is built from evidence.
  • The subconscious updates when it experiences success.
  • Hypnosis allows us to create many of those same subconscious shifts without needing to jump from an airplane.

You don’t have to skydive to change your life.

Hypnosis and Belief Code help you rewrite the subconscious story that says:

“I’m not enough.”

“I’m not safe.”

“I can’t.”

“I’m stuck.”

I thought my experience was about jumping from an airplane. The YouTube video can be found here: https://youtu.be/okB64DTLs-g?si=nEOPHhWS4OcbR7tC

It turns out it was about jumping past an old version of myself.

One leap reminded me why I believe so strongly in hypnosis and Belief Code. The biggest distance we ever travel isn’t measured in feet. It’s measured in beliefs.
